Text Box:   Shannon Bertolino, MS, DVM

 

Dr. Bertolino graduated from SUNY Potsdam in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology.  She then attended graduate school at the University of Kentucky where she received a Master’s Degree in molecular biology.  She graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 2003.  Throughout her education, she has worked extensively in research laboratories, studying the pathogenesis of gonorrhea, the RNA processing capability of immune cells, and the pathogenesis of cryptosporidiosis. After graduation from veterinary school, Dr. Bertolino moved with her family to the greater Hartford area and practiced in East Hartford for one year before joining the staff of Star Meadow.  She purchased the practice in partnership with Dr. Battiston in December 2005.

Dr. Bertolino now lives in the Farmington Valley with her family and two german shepherds, Gandalf and Devon.

She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association, Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association, Hartford County Veterinary Medical Association, and Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society.  Her special interests include anesthesiology and critical care.

 

 

 

 

 

Text Box:  Tanya Sloan Battiston, DVM

 

Dr. Battiston, originally from Rhode Island, graduated cum laude from the University of Rhode Island in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and Technology. She worked as a veterinary technician during her four years of college, and was an active member in her sorority, as head of philanthropy. She was honored with the President’s Award for Academic Excellence in Animal Science upon graduation.

Following graduation, Dr. Battiston attended Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She was consistently recognized on the Dean’s Honor list and was elected into the Society of Phi Zeta, the Veterinary Medical Honor Society.  She worked in the parasitology research laboratory at Kansas State during her training, and supervised field studies involving efficacy of flea preventatives. Dr. Battiston received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1998.

Since 1998, Dr. Battiston has practiced small animal medicine and surgery in the greater Hartford area. She left her position of six years as Chief of Staff and veterinarian, in 2004, to be closer to her family, and joined the staff of Star Meadow. Since December 2005, Drs. Battiston and Bertolino share ownership of the hospital.

Dr. Battiston’s special areas of interest include internal medicine, ophthalmology, parasitology, arthritic control and prevention, “pocket pets”, and client education to control overall pet wellness. She is recognized as a member of the National Register’s Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals, and the Manchester Who’s Who.

Dr. Battiston lives in Farmington with her husband Jacob, her son Blake, her cockapoo Bogey, her shipoo, Berkley, and her two cats Emma and Viola.

 

 

 

 

 

Text Box:  Corey C. Shagensky, DVM

 

Dr. Shagensky is a native of Waterbury, Connecticut.  In 1996 he graduated from Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts and served in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Seattle, Washington.  Dr. Shagensky worked in diabetes research at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for three years before attending the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in Ithaca, New York.  While at Cornell, Dr. Shagensky was involved in aquatic animal medicine and breast cancer genetics research.  Dr. Shagensky completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists in East Greenwich, Rhode Island before joining the staff of the Cheshire Veterinary Hospital as a general practitioner.  He is an avid cyclist who has participated in several long-distance charity bike rides and completed a solo cycling tour of Ireland.
